Company history
The Consortium of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG Protection is located within the prestigious Villa Brandolini D’Adda in Solighetto, an eighteenth-century Venetian villa located in a scenic location at the foot of the Pieve di Soligo hills.
In 1962 a group of 11 producers decided to establish the Consortium proposing a production protocol, but only seven years later, in April 2 1969, the Ministry of Agriculture decided to recognize the territory of Conegliano Valdobbiadene as the only DOC (i.e. controlled designation of origin) production area of the Prosecco and the “Superior of Cartizze” wine.
In 2003, the territory of Conegliano Valdobbiadene was recognized as the First Sparkling Wine District of Italy. In the same year, thanks to the collaboration between the Consortium and the Economic Observatory of the Center for Research in Viticulture and Enology (CIRVE) of the University of Padua, the District Study Centre was established in Conegliano, with the aim to improve the knowledge of the market and provide companies with a tool to enhance the effectiveness of its strategy. In addition, every year the Study Centre prepares, in cooperation with companies, a report on the progress of the district.
In 2008 the project for the recognition of the hills of Conegliano Valdobbiadene as Unesco Heritage started. It is a cultural landscape generated by a continuous process, which evolved in history, where the work of the winegrowers has helped to create a unique setting.
In 2009, with the reorganization of Prosecco denominations, the Ministry of Agriculture classifies it as Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin (DOCG) wine, the highest Italian quality standard.
Today the consortium brings together not less than 183 wineries and 3,000 winegrowers families located within the Conegliano Valdobbiadene area.
What we do
The Consortium is a private organization of public interest and brings together all categories of producers: the winegrowers, winemakers and bottlers. The main themes developed are the protection, promotion and sustainability.
Through the collaboration with research institutes, The consortium ensures the improvement of the production technique in the vineyard and in the winery, providing an assistance service following all the stages of production starting from the pruning to the choice of the time of the harvest, both in the vineyard and in the winery. The activity of denomination standards control, carried out by the Consortium, is performed by Valoritalia since 2009, which is a company recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry for quality control and product traceability.
Another goal of the Consortium is to ensure and improve the quality of Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG and especially to raise awareness and protect its image in Italy and abroad. In order to ensure this, the Consortium promotes and organizes events and also participates every year to national and international events such as Prowein, Vinitaly e Vinexpo. The main annual event is always Vino in Villa: a Festival dedicated to Prosecco Superiore DOCG which takes place at San Salvatore castle in Susegana (TV).
In addition, the Consortium has initiated a number of projects aimed at the sustainability and preservation of the biodiversity of the area. To this purpose, the Viticultural Protocol of DOCG Conegliano Valdobbiadene has been drafted: it is a document signed by a committee of experts, chaired by the Consortium, to promote and safeguard the production area and the beauty of its landscape.
